Catherine Moriarty
Professor of Art and Design History

…will present her inaugural lecture entitled:

‘Curating the Past: the monument, the archive and the database’

on Wednesday 29th October at 6.30pm

Sallis Benney Theatre
University of Brighton
58-67 Grand Parade
Brighton
BN2 0JY

How the past is represented in the present has always been central to many branches of the humanities. This lecture explores a number of the frameworks within which the past is situated in the present through consideration of particular ‘sites of memory’ with which most of us are reasonably familiar: the monument, the archive, and the database. Rather than addressing the content of these sites, Moriarty explores how we need firstly to understand their structure, for it is through this that control over content, over what we do or do not see, is exercised.

Both art and design history offer ways to look critically at the organizing structures that make the past visible in the present. Such insights are especially vital since digital objects and networks accelerate the ways in which information is presented to and extracted from us, as well as requiring us to navigate and arrange content with increasing agility.

What does it mean to curate the past and what does this mean for researchers both within and beyond the University?

Free event, all welcome although you must book your place. Light refreshments will be served after the lecture.

Professor Alan Tomlinson, author of FIFA: The Men, the Myths and the Money is joined by David Goldblatt, author of The Ball is Round and Futebol Nation: The Story of Brazil through Soccer.

Their expert discussion will include the results of behind-the-scenes investigations of the industry, revealing the use of football by ruthless and, sometimes corrupt, officials, and its expansion under the influence of commerce. What turns people off from politics? In 1950 nearly 84% of the UK population came out to vote in the general election but since the nineties, election turnout has plummeted.

Isn’t it time to ‘unplug’ ourselves from mainstream politics and have an alternative conversation about the reality of our lives and what we really want from politics?

In the spirit of Bonfire Night, let's beat the establishment!

With Caroline Lucas, Davy Jones and speakers from the community.

Music from Laura and the Bass, food provided.

Brighton Burlesque Festival

With a line-up of over 10 top Burlesque acts including headliner Sukki Singapore, whose stage performances have won her worldwide recognition, the Brighton Burlesque Festival will be a glamorous and unmissable presentation of this unique art form.

The exotic performers will take centre stage at an eight-hour event at the Thistle Hotel Brighton on Saturday 15th November, from 2pm to 10 pm.

As well as the main stage, there will also be side events, including pole dancing, workshops and a range of fun stuff for all. Other attractions will be Burlesque fashion stalls and complementary trades displaying their products throughout the day.

There’s also plenty for those wanting to get involved, with “have a go” sessions and prizes for the best-dressed visitors.

The festival is the first in Brighton to turn a spotlight on an entertaining art form, often described as risqué and decadent, that never fails to please. Built on the finest artistic principles of dance and style, these will be portrayed throughout the festival by the performers in a variety of forms, from sultry and traditional to frisky and fun.

Brighton Burlesque Festival will then celebrate a very special day with an after party event at the Thistle Hotel’s Waterfront Bar, from 11pm to 2am (entrance £3). Tickets for the event are just £10 in advance. Visit www.brightonburlesque.co.uk for details. Tickets are also available through many top online ticket agents and also from local high street outlets.
And the good news that is likely to cause an excited fluttering of those ostrich feathers is that the event organisers are planning to make the event an annual festival.

Reclaim The Night Brighton is back!

Last year hundreds of people marched through Brighton to assert everyone's right to feel safe on the streets at night. Join us again this year and help us take a stand against street harassment and sexual violence!

Starting at Brighton Train Station, we’ll be marching through the streets of our city to The Sallis Benney Theatre on Grand Parade. Here we’ll be hosting a fantastic line-up of speakers, performers and short films.

Reclaim The Night is open to people of all genders. Our event is trans* inclusive and we are pro sex worker rights.

This year we will be raising funds for the National Ugly Mugs Scheme run by the UK Network of Sex Work Projects (supporting the rights and safety of sex workers) and local charity Survivors’ Network (supporting survivors of sexual violence)

March with us to demand safer streets and call for an end to gender based violence!

Bite Size Movies presents The return of the ZOMBIE FILM MAKING COURSE FOR ADULTS

SHOOT THE DEAD!!!!!

Due to the popularity of the first zombie course we are repeating the same course over one evening and two days in Feb 2015 .

If you've ever wanted to make or be in your own zombie movie then this course from Bite Size Movies may be something you can get your teeth into.

In two days in a collaborative process, we will be improvising, scripting, story boarding and creating our own short zombie film from scratch.

Depending on the script produced we will be filming the movie using a combination of location and green screen techniques.

We will also have a professional visual make up artist for all the necessary zombie make up and gore effects. A professional acting coach and a small production crew will also be helping to bring the film alive. Zombie extras will be provided on the filming day as well if necessary.

You don't need any film or acting experience as all camera training and acting coaching will be done on the first day. All film equipment is supplied as well as a liberal spread of props.

The course would be ideal for work or family outings! Or a present for a die hard horror film fan!

THE COURSE INCLUDES:
* A brief history of Zombie films with a interactive multi-media talk.
* An afternoon with a professional acting coach
* Scripting & story boarding the short film
* Zombie make up tests and full make up with a professional make up artist
* Special visual effects
* Green screen (if necessary)
* Location filming (scouted by the team)
* All film equipment supplied
* Props (where necessary)
* Zombie extras on standby for larger scenes (if necessary)
* A DVD of the finished film
* Lots of blood & guts

We can only take a maximum of twelve people for the course so do book early to avoid disappointment.

Please note: Because of the short amount of time we have Bite Size Movies will be editing the finished footage.

The film from the first course will be posted on this site as soon as it's completed. Watch this space!

" It was an excellent couple of days and the balance was just right - friendly but also professional and attendees learnt a lot. Really enjoyed the whole process! Many thanks!" - A participant from the first zombie course

A tour of all that's peculiar to Brighton.
What connects Abba and the Portuguese Revolution? Mount Everest and a supermarket in Hove? A stained wall and the genesis of a worldwide retail brand? What's the story behind a same-sex wedding in 1923...Britain's 'most useless' monarch...a certain Parisian radio station? And why is my charming Regency property damp and crumbling? Only in Brighton...

Only in Brighton is a vivid 80-minute guided walk. It is a curiously fact-filled and tongue-in-cheek look at the landmarks, past and present, that make Brighton a city like no other. For the visitor, it is an insider's introduction; for the hardened Brightonian, a revelation and celebration. This personal tribute cuts to the heart of a unique city in all its glory, shame and muesli.
