Dearest nerds and friends of nerds
Welcome to Nerd Nite Brighton #3! We're hoping it will be more Dark Knight Rises than Revenge Of The Sith...
Do join us for the usual three nerdy talks, nerdy debate, lots of nerdy drinking, quizzes, games and music.
We are very excited again to have some top class speakers with us this month. We have our first international speaker too (all the way from the United States of Canadia):
1. How to find Starbursts in space - Dr Charlotte Clarke
from the Astronomy Unit at the University of Sussex and will be our Brian Cox for the evening. Her research in extragalactic astronomy revolves around far-infrared data from the Herschel Space Observatory, helping to get to grips with the formation of galaxies when the Universe was less than half its current age. She’s also heavily involved in public engagement in Brighton and the surrounding areas.
2. How strong are earthworms and can they make choices? - Dr Robert Stovold
Robert is a very busy man. He juggles running the Brighton and Hove Humanist Society, Philosophy in Pubs, his role in the National Secular Society, writing books and singing in various karaoke haunts around town with his daily work with B&H Council. However tonight he will be returning to his (literal) roots and his PhD in Soil Science to talk to us about earthworm burrowing.
3. Whistleblowing in the age of Wikileaks: From the Pentagon Papers to Cablegate - Dr Patrick McCurdy, University of Ottawa, Canada.
Flying over especially for Nerd Nite Brighton (well… kinda) Patrick’s research examines the representation of politically contentious issues in an age of media saturation. He received his PhDfrom the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in 2009. His thesis examined how radical social movement actors think about and interact with media at the site of protest. He is widely published and his book Beyond WikiLeaks: Implications for the Future of Communications, Journalism and Society released this year forms some of the basis of his talk tonight.
___________________________________________
There’ll be the usual quizzes and music but to celebrate our 3rd event we’re also having a bit of a party afterwards so it would be great if you could come and hang out. Perhaps throw some shapes (as long as they’re geometric and congruent) on the dance floor?
Looking forward to seeing all your lovely nerdy faces. Be there AND be square!

A Brighton Life Drawing Session run by Draw
Feet are often overlooked in a life drawing; the ‘Feet’ class provides time to look in detail at the feet, in isolation and as part of a full figure drawing. We will be working through short and long portrait poses with the tutor providing problem solving input on request in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere with good company, tea, coffee and drawing materials all included.
The session is a 2.5 hour fully tutored drawing class open to all abilities but particularly appropriate for beginners and anyone wanting to return to the basic elements of figure drawing.
The class will compliment future tutored sessions and will follow on from past tutored sessions but also stands alone as a class in itself; no past experience is necessary.

Join us for a procrastination-busting one-day writing retreat in lovely Brighton town for some word-based arse-kicking to make sure you move on with your project.
This workshop is about quantity, not quality. We will be declaring war on procrastination and smashing writing blocks to smithereens.
There are few things more motivating than competition. Competition and biscuits. Set your personal word count goal for the day and compete against other writers. Score points for every 100 words written. Race to the first 1,000 words. Games, silliness and supportive competitiveness to break you out of your writerly malaise.
Who is this for?
This workshop is perfect for people with a project in progress that has stalled or been put aside while life takes over, or those with an idea they want to make a big start on, or those who want to drink tea and eat biscuits and write some words in a fun, supportive environment.

With playful exercises, these sessions will stretch your acting muscles and offer new ways to play, to create and to perform.
Come and develop your palette and tools, play with a broader set of choices, and find more freedom to act, both on stage, and in life.
We will learn through exercises, games and more, about (among other things)…

• Being warm with an audience
• Playfulness
• Listening and responding to the moment
• Exploring your emotional range
• Coming back and developing a character
• Incorporating your personal experience
• Storytelling
• Working with text
• Becoming non-human
• Failing and falling
• Taking risks
• Sustaining an act
• Accepting offers.
Plus...
Playing with the comfort zones of the audience

Burning Bridges to be True to yourself, and building new ones elsewhere.
Playing with Overacting
Falling as deeply into stereotypes as you can get.
Enjoying Being Melodramatic
Exploring being emotionally self-indulgent on stage
Using conflict to heighten the dramatic stakes
Exploring ugliness
Staying on stage too long.
Using your faults.
Breaking rules.
Playing characters you're not supposed to play (toying with taboos)
Open to all levels, from beginners to experienced performers.
Techniques drawn upon will include Theatre of The Oppressed, Five Rhythms, The Fool, mime, text, storytelling, walkabout & street theatre, contact improvisation, puppetry, physical theatre.
