Mindfulness has been used for thousands of years to promote wellbeing. It is now widely recognised as being a powerful tool that can help anyone enhance their appreciation of life, manage stress, and even improve performance in activities and tasks. Its advocates even include an American Congressman, and it's now used used in a wide variety of settings, such as healthcare, business, education, and sport..
There is also strong scientific evidence that ‘tried and tested’ 8-week mindfulness courses such as Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) can reduce stress and anxiety (MBCT & MBSR), and relapse rates into depression (MBCT).
Nick has taught over forty 8-week mindfulness courses, has an MA in Teaching Mindfulness-based Courses, and is an Associate Teacher at the Centre for Mindfulness Research and Practice at Bangor University.

Introduction to Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Trauma survivors often come to the practice of yoga upon the recommendation of their healthcare providers in order to cultivate as Babette Rothschild, M.S.W., L.C.S.W. states, “the simple body awareness that makes it possible to gauge, slow down, and halt traumatic hyperarousal, and to separate past from present.”
But not all yoga classes are designed to meet the unique theraputic needs of individuals living with the somatic aftermath of trauma. Trauma-sensitive yoga classes help survivors gently reconnect with their bodies in a safe, supportive manner that emphasizes choice, mindfulness and ease.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga can help survivors overcome past traumatic experiences, empowering them to live connected and embodied lives. Traumatic events may lead to isolation and feelings of helplessness. Traumatic stressors can cause symptoms including anxiety and depression that lead individuals to develop a variety of dysfunctional coping strategies. We will explore how to offer healthy self-regulation strategies, better coping skills and the use of breath and body sensations to connect safely to the present moment.
This workshop is open to Yoga Teachers, clinicians and healthcare practitioners interested in learning more about an evidence-based approach to Trauma Sensitive Yoga.
Sarah Holmes de Castro has been conducting yoga classes with a therapeutic focus since 2003, mostly with clients who are impacted by trauma and/or addiction. She is the Coordinator (currently on maternity leave) at Vancouver-based charity Yoga Outreach, facilitating over 20 yoga programs in a wide variety of venues with clients living with mental health and addiction issues and the impacts of trauma and delivering trainings in trauma sensitive yoga. In 2010 she completed a Trauma Sensitive Yoga Teacher Training at the Trauma Center, Boston, MA, and is currently completing a 1000-hour certification as a Yoga Therapist with Integrative Yoga Therapy.

Reiki Master Susan Hall will be holding a Reiki Level 1 Course over 2 Sundays. As part of the course each student will be attuned to the Reiki healing energy. This process then allows the student to give healing to themselves and others throughout their lifetime.
Sue's classes are friendly and informal, and you will experience the simple method of how Reiki is performed. Learning Reiki is not an academic exercise so it is suitable for people of all ages.
During a Reiki treatment, the hands are placed lightly on 12 basic positions on the fully clothed body. The Reiki energy naturally activates and radiates via the palms of the practitioner’s hands. The recipient’s own healing mechanisms draw the right amount of energy wherever needed on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual level.
Reiki allows the recipient to enter a state of balance where healing can take place. It is a transformational energy that can be life changing.
On successful completion of the 2 day course, you will receive a Reiki Level 1 Certificate. The course runs from 10.00am to 5.00pm each day and the cost of £150 includes free refreshments throughout the course.

Tai Chi Ch'uan is an ancient form of slow, graceful and rhythmic exercise which originated in China, where it is still extremely popular, often being performed in public parks early in the morning when the air is at its freshest. The style taught here is the Yang style Short Form as developed by Professor Ch'eng Man Ch'ing, currently the most popular form of Tai Chi in the U.K.
Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as 'meditation in movement' or 'swimming in air' for externally that is how it appears. It is a soft martial art, quite unlike karate, ju jitsu or any of the 'hard' martial arts which rely on force and speed.
Tai Chi strengthens our internal energy, and allows it to flow more freely through the body. It is gentle and non-violent, though after much practice it is an extremely effective form of self defence. Whatever your level of skill, from complete Beginners to Advanced students, this class will suit all abilities. The venue has full access for people with disabilities.

Reduce stress, anxiety and low moods, and enhance wellbeing naturally! This course is relevant for anyone and provides an approach that can help us appreciate life more, and manage the challenges that it presents to us all from time to time.
Mindfulness can help bring . . .
- Freedom from negative thoughts and emotions
- Greater awareness of the beauty of ordinary things
- Calmness and ‘spaciousness’
- Skills for managing painful experiences
- Sensitivity and responsiveness to life
- Improved relationships
Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction (MBSR) was originally developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn as a program to help people manage the stress of chronic pain. In controlled trials it has also been shown to reduce anxiety. MBSR has now been scientifically shown to reduce stress in healthy people too, related to everyday life situations. In fact, recent ICM survey showed that almost three quarters of doctors now think that all patients would benefit from learning mindfulness meditation skills. Mindfulness is also increasingly being used in workplace settings, and there is even evidence that it can increase performance in sport. Many people also report that it improves their personal relationships.
This course is entirely non-religious and includes a course handbook and four guided meditation CDs. Nick has taught more than forty 8-week mindfulness courses. He has an MA in Teaching Mindfulness-based Courses, a Certificate of Competence to Teach Mindfulness-based Courses and an Intermediate Counselling Skills Certificate. Pilates is far more than just a muscle toning, stretching and relaxation programme. By developing core abdominal strength, Pilates ensures that whatever activity you undertake your spine is supported and protected.
For this reason Pilates is recommended as a rehabilitation programme for back problems by health specialists such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths.
Tutor Beth Bristow guides you through a course of Pilates classes. All levels welcome at both classes, though the later class is more suited to students with some Pilates experience. Please bring a mat, plus towel or blanket. Mats are sold at a discount of £2.00 to all enrolled students.

All Scaravelli Yoga classes are held on Monday evenings at St Michael's Church Hall, High Street, Lewes.
All Ante-Natal Yoga classes are held on Thursday evenings at Equilibrium Studio, 33 Cliffe High Street, Lewes.
Early booking is advised, as classes often sell out - see booking info below. Please call 01273 470955 for update on availability and to enrol (or go on to a short waiting list for places on future courses).
