Sharon Lewis (aka 'Lady Ukulele') will be performing from 1300-1400. Lady Ukulele performs old fashioned songs from the 1940's and 50's alongside folk and country classics. An enchanting singer with a voice that tugs at your heart strings and makes you smile at the same time. A lady with a ukulele. George Formby would be proud of her. www.sharonlewis.net

Featuring members of Elastica, Los Albertos, The Kooks and Kalakuta Millionaires, Oscillator fuse ska, electro-funk, psychedelia and jazz. Fundamentally a bitch-ass cooking dance band.
8-piece Meow Meows are a happy muddle of 60's garage, dirty pop, rumbling rocksteady rhythm, hot horns, and heart, topped off by two all-dancing, all harmonising female signers armed with tongue-in-cheek lyrics and a killer stage presence.
Oscillator are currently confirmed for a number of festivals in 2013, including Boomtown and Glastonbury.

A rare UK opportunity to hear two of Sweden’s most celebrated and accomplished folk musicians!
Olov Johansson (nyckelharpa*) and Roger Tallroth (guitar/bouzouki/octave mandolin) are core members of the quite exceptional Väsen (‘vairsun’). They have been playing and recording together for over twenty years with their roots in the Swedish Folk tradition, but taking it in a whole new direction with their original compositions and arrangements. Their instrumental expertise is outstanding. Their performances set a new standard of musical empathy.
Prepare to be astonished.
Support from popular local folk trio The Rude Mechanicals.
*Nyckelharpa: ‘keyed fiddle’. A traditional Swedish instrument: Olov is recognised as one of the world’s best players.

Wednesday May 29th at the Blind Tiger Club 4 bands and 4 visual artists come together to raise funds for No More Durty Water http://nomoredurtywater.org/ We have some nuggets of bands performing an intimate gig for you which would normally play big stages and it's only £4 entry!
Black Market Karma are rolling in their huge wall of sound from London under the influence of the likes of Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3, Velvet Underground, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Jesus & Mary Chain, Astroid #4. This is a insanely good opportunity to catch these guys for peanuts before they come back down for the the big ESP (Endless Summer Psychedelia) party on the August 10th at Concorde 2 (£14) so don't miss out an opportunity to get sweaty with them and only 200 people at the Blind Tiger!
http://www.blackmarketkarma.com/
Kassassin Street have just finished their tour of the north, playing a hypnotic and psychedelic blend of alternative music and krautrock. They are frequently praised for their individuality and musicianship, last year started with the band featuring on BBC Introducing, and led to the 5-piece playing nights for Club NME as well as supporting 2:54, Art Brut, The Big Pink, The Sheepdogs and Aziz Ibrahim.
http://kassassinstreet.com/
Carmen Rosa featuring Ben Baxter of Cranes, have recently released their mini-album "Delay the World", blending together Ian Brown-esque vocals with that balmy sound of a summer afternoon in the 90s. Think the Verve meets Dandy Warhols, filtered through a pair of rose-tinted spectacles. These guys have been on the road for 10 years and have supported the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, The Australian Pink Floyd and performed at Bestival two summers ago. Expect levitation!
https://soundcloud.com/carmenrosa/sets
Oh! Captain is a Brighton based three piece encompassing of the multi-taltented Hope Rudd, Jamie Jolly and Sadie Brown. Two guitars, drums and three vocals and a shit load of control of whirling, looped psychedelia. Think At the Drive-In meets Mars Volta and check in at the Drive-In on Mars!
https://www.facebook.com/oh.captain2012?fref=ts
Cassettelord needs no introduction for us Brighton folks. The street artist will be creating live works on the night and has also very kindly donated one of his pieces to the event. We will draw a lucky winner out of the ticket numbers, so keep hold of your ticket for a chance of owning an original Cassetlord work!
http://cassettelord.com/
El Wenche Winlove is currently exhibiting her 'Brighton Splendour' cartoon at Moksha Café which is also being turned into an animation film. This will be shown on a big screen, drive-in cinema style, between bands along with other animated works of hers.
http://elwenche.wix.com/el-wenche-winlove
Atomsphere is providing the great backdrop for the night: a cymascopic approach to band visuals. We can't wait to see this in action! He has no web site as of yet, but we can promise you some bad ass art work from this profoundly talented man!
Partial Facsimile has promised a couple of mixed-media installations of the mind-boggling kind, but would not give out more information than that. All we can say is; come and explore her tactile work!
Also, we have been informed that Captain O'Dave of Carmen Rosa have got some works for us to hang, but what it's depicting remains a secret, though we've been promised it is of a psychedelic character.
Let the magic begin!
Tickets are now on sale from Brighton Student Union, Grand Parade and Resident Music, Kensington Gardens (50p charge).
Hope to see you all there! :)

This is an amazing opportunity to catch one of the rare performances of this unique and exciting band, blending world music with strong North African as well as French elements.
2013 is the 31st year of Lo’Jo’s existence, having recently released their 13th studio album, Cinema el Mundo.
Hailing from Angers in the west of France, Lo’Jo have performed throughout the world from Agadir, Adelaide, Chicago, New York, Buenos-Aires, and Kathmandu to name but a few. The group is highly acclaimed in the world music community and a prominent member of the WOMAD circuit.
They were pivotal in the organisation of the very first Festival Of The Desert held in Mali in 2001, where they launched the international careers of the Touareg poet Tinariwen.
This sextet is the nucleus around which countless free radicals have orbited for moments of magic during the past three decades; Robert Plant, Robert Wyatt, Justin Adams, Reunion Island, maestro René Lacaille, Georgian panduri legend Nias Diasamidze, cellist Vincent Segal, and many more.
Don’t miss out on this magical musical experience.

The Move was one of the leading British rock bands of the 1960s. They scored nine Top 20 UK singles in five years and went on to become one of the best and most significant bands of their era.
Bev Bevan and Trevor Burton are both founding members of The Move, and over a period of around 6 years enjoyed huge success in Great Britain and Europe. The Move also built a reputation as one of the most respected and controversial bands of the sixties.
They often performed alongside the likes of Cream, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Joe Cocker, The Kinks, and The Byrds, and in 1968 toured the UK with Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd.
The band notched up 10 hit singles, including chart topper Blackberry Way and the first record ever to be played on BBC Radio One: Flowers In The Rain.
Following the tragic loss of ‘Move’ lead vocalist Carl Wayne to cancer in 2004, Bev and Trevor agreed to recreate the magic of ‘The Move’ and bring the band’s music to a new generation of fans.
The Move, featuring original members Trevor Burton and Bev Bevan (plus Neil Lockwood, Phil Tree, and Gordon Healer) now regularly perform around the world, including Ropetackle this June!

Obaro Ejimiwe, aka Ghostpoet, laughs when he remembers how Gilles Peterson “took a risk on a random maverick” back in 2010 by signing him to the Radio 1 DJ’s Brownswood imprint. Within a year, that risk paid off: Ghostpoet’s debut album, Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam, marked him out as one of the most distinct, uncategorisable and forward-thinking voices to emerge in British music this decade, and it was rewarded with a surprise Mercury Prize nomination in 2011. It was a sudden rise for a man who for whom news of a record deal came in the same week that he was made redundant from his office job in insurance.
Two years on, having moved on from Brownswood to [PIAS], Ghostpoet’s creativity has blossomed even more. On his second album, Some Say I So I Say Light, he pushes even further in all directions than on Peanut Butter Blues, mixing the abstract and the concrete with uncanny skill. A treat awaits all who attend The Haunt on June 6th for what is sure to be another unforgettable showcase of Obaro’s talent as he performs material from his amazing new album.

From The Jam - Unplugged
@
Ropetackle Arts Centre
Ropetackle Arts Centre
BN43 5EG
From The Jam gained an immediate reputation for the kind of incendiary ‘live’ performances that sealed the reputation of The Jam all those years ago and 2012 has been another very busy year for the band.
The phenomenal response to the new Foxton album highlighted the strength and quality of new songs, co-written by Bruce Foxton and Russell Hastings, including the first single from the album, ‘Number Six’. Fitting seamlessly alongside such a rich back catalogue, From The Jam continue to move ever onwards. Performed ‘unplugged’ by Bruce and Russell, the songs - old and new – shine with a new light.
Recently reconciled following family bereavements, Paul Weller’s single ‘Fast Car/Slow Traffic’ from his most recent album, also featured Bruce on bass. There were also incredible scenes when Bruce recently appeared ‘live’ alongside Paul – for the first time in 28 years – to perform The Jam classics ‘The Eton Rifles’ and ‘The Butterfly Collector’ as well as ‘Fast Car/Slow Traffic’ at the second of Weller’s five night residency at the Albert Hall. Subsequently, the two worked together on the sleeve notes of the 30th Anniversary release of ‘Sound Affects’ by The Jam.
PAUL WELLER now appears as one of two Very Special Guests on the new FOXTON album, ‘Back In The Room’, along with Stax and Blues Brothers legend, STEVE CROPPER. The album contains a total of 12 tracks, all written by Bruce Foxton and From The Jam vocalist/guitarist, Russell Hastings .
The Jam had amazing chart success with 18 singles and 7 albums to make the top 40 in the United Kingdom from their debut in 1977 to their break up in 1982. Their last 5 albums were all top ten hits and their last 8 singles made it into the top 10. ‘Just Who Is The 5 O’Clock Hero?‘ made the charts at No. 8 as an import and remains the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK.
BRUCE FOXTON is a part of the English Rock & Roll establishment. A musician who is most commonly recognised as the bass player in legendary The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers.
RUSSELL HASTINGS worked with Rick Buckler since November 2005. A musician/vocalist in his own right Russell has shocked audiences nationwide this year with his authentic and passionate interpretation in performance (vocals and guitar) of The Jam’s back catalogue.
Please note, this is an all standing event.

With Guests John Altman & Liam Genocky
John Altman began his musical career at age 3 with Judy Garland at the London Palladium! Commencing his recording and live career as an in-demand saxophonist in the late 60s he has performed with all the major figures in music over the last few decades, including Eric Clapton, Sting, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Jimmy Page, and Prince.
There simply isn’t the room to list all his achievements in the music business, suffice it to say his composing has won him many plaudits including an Emmy, and perhaps he’s most famous for creating (with Eric Idle) Monty Python’s ‘Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life‘ (a song that, most people would agree, contains a healthy brand of cheerful cynicism that fits in perfectly with Mike Hatchard).
If that’s not enough to coax you to come and see this unique performer, Google him – but be prepared for an awful lot of reading. And if that’s still not enough to persuade you, come anyway to check out one of the most happening rhythm sections on the south coast, including George Trebar on bass.
Mike is also joined by Steelye Span drummer Liam Genocky.

Three Bonzos and a Piano: 50th Anniversary Year
@
The Old Market
The Old Market
BN3 1AS
It’s half a century since Viv Stanshall and Rodney Slater conceived the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band and…
… now celebrate 50 years of Bonzo insanity by releasing their second album BUM NOTES containing spoofs on a variety of styles of music - starting with the famous Blue Note jazz label - a habit maintained since the sixties from their Gorilla album onwards.
From the legendary sixties group THE BONZO DOG DOO DAH BAND, take three original members - Sam Spoons, Rodney Slater & Roger Ruskin Spear - add uber-pianist Dave Glasson (whose pedigree goes all the way back to the Whoopee Band) and you have a recipe for a great 50th Anniversary show.
Now mix in a host of classic songs from the Bonzos back catalogue (Monster Mash-Hunting Tigers Out In Indiah-I'm Bored-Canyons Of Your Mind etc.) together with a handful of new tunes celebrating the absurdity of ageing (Baldness-Memory Loss-Medication) and you know you are in for an unforgettable night.
And as if all this was not enough marvel as a host of old theatrical props and costumes and even older gags are used to recreate the madness of an early BONZO DOG DOO DAH BAND SHOW.
NOT TO BE MISSED.

Martin Bramah, original Fall guitarist formed Blue Orchids in 1979. Several singles followed plus an album selling over 10,000 copies, Peel sessions, tours with Echo & The Bunnymen, Nico and in their own right. They split mid 80s, reforming occasionally. This is their first Brighton gig for over 30 years.

Coming on the heels of her successful 2012 release Hello Cruel World, and an 11 month tour to promote the album, Gretchen Peters is back on the road in 2013 on her “Woman On The Wheel” tour.
2012 was a landmark year for the Grammy Nominated singer-songwriter from Nashville: she appeared at the prestigious Isle Of Wight and Cambridge Folk Festivals (also appearing at the latter as special guest to John Prine), and she supported Prine, as well as country and folk legends Guy Clark and Arlo Guthrie at additional shows in the US.
Hello Cruel World was a Top 5 Americana album in the US, while holding down the No.1 spot on the Euro Americana chart for an entire month; the title track held a spot on BBC Radio 2′s B-Playlist for an unprecedented seven weeks. Her own peers may be her biggest fans, though; Rodney Crowell (her duet partner on “Dark Angel”) calls Hello Cruel World ”beautiful, brave, and poetic“, while her “Saint Francis” co-writer, Tom Russell, calls it “the best record I’ve heard in many, many years“.
Peters calls Hello Cruel World her “most close-to-the-bone work, written at a time when I felt absolutely fearless about telling the truth”. She keeps the accent on beauty throughout this, her ninth disc, with both her poetic language and the spare, evocative sounds she created supporting her organic story-telling.
“Peters specialises in tales of regret and loss, sung with great clarity” ~ Financial Times

“Banhart makes music that interprets so many styles that it belongs in a universe of its own.” New Yorker
Devendra Banhart releases his Nonesuch debut, Mala, on March 12, 2013, and will be appearing at TOM as part of his spring tour.
Mala, Banhart’s eighth studio album, was recorded in his then-home in Los Angeles. (He now resides in New York City.) He and Georgeson played most of the instruments themselves, using borrowed equipment and a vintage Tascam recorder they’d found in a pawn shop.
Banhart first attracted international notice with his 2002 debut album, Oh Me Oh My … The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit—a collection of recordings he had made for himself. Subsequent albums include Rejoicing in the Hands, Niño Rojo, Cripple Crow, and Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon. He has collaborated with fellow musicians including Antony and the Johnsons, Beck, Vashti Bunyan, Os Mutantes, Swans, and Vetiver.
An accomplished visual artist, Banhart’s distinctive, minutely inked, often enigmatic drawings have appeared in galleries all over the world. He has created the cover art for most of his records, and in 2010 his artwork and packaging for What Will We Be was nominated for a Grammy.

After his award winning show Bravo Figaro Mark sets himself the task of committing 100 Acts Of Minor Dissent in the space of a year. ‘The three brothers cannily balance respect for the past with a determination to push on further down the road‘ ~ The Times
The Brubeck family is unique in the world of music. Seldom has an entire family been as prolific and talented. Four of Dave Brubeck‘s five children are professional musicians and, like the Dankworths, they all take off in different directions coming together at special times.
In the 70s and 80s the three brothers recorded and toured worldwide with Dave as Two Generations Of Brubeck and The New Brubeck Quartet. Now Darius, Chris, and Dan Brubeck, alongside special guest saxophonist Dave O’Higgins, come together to play the music that made their father such a revered icon of modern jazz. This show will feature famous Brubeck originals such as Take Five, as well as standard tunes associated with Dave and a few of their own popular compositions.
While gaining substantial recognition in their own careers, playing their father’s music has always been an important part of their professional lives.
For over fifty years, Dave Brubeck has been a giant of American jazz, exciting millions of fans with his inimitable improvisation and rhythms. He changed the landscape of jazz in the 1950s and 1960s, broadening its scope and audience, and recorded the first jazz instrumental album to go gold.

Having toured the UK and US together this year, David Ford and Jarrod Dickenson are coming to Brighton for a unique, intimate double-headline show at The Hope.
With four albums of eclectic, emotive and utterly engaging songs in his arsenal, British singer/songwriter David Ford's live show is “unmissable... one of Britain's best," according to The Guardian. Texas-born, New York City-based Jarrod Dickenson's unique mixture of folk, Americana and roots blues won him an army of fans when he was handpicked by Ford to support him and perform in his band on his recent tours.
Now the two are teaming up for their first ever joint headline performance in what will be Ford's first Brighton appearance in over two years and Dickenson's debut turn in the city.

Thea Gilmore
@
Ropetackle Arts Centre
Ropetackle Arts Centre

Critically acclaimed songwriter Thea Gilmore returns supporting the release of her new studio album Regardless.
If the name’s familiar, it may be thanks to the many plaudits the press have directed Gilmore’s way, or the endorsement of fans including Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez, or perhaps even her posthumous Sandy Denny collaborative track ‘London’, which dominated last year’s BBC London Olympics coverage, climbing into the upper reaches of the iTunes singles chart.
Gilmore is nothing if not prolific – Regardless is her 14th album in as many years – but this latest album grew out of an enforced hiatus. In 2011 she gave birth to her second son, and had to take several months out from music – a potentially frustrating state of affairs for a musician with a fierce work ethic. The break, however, allowed her a distance to look at her own work with fresh eyes.
“When you write as much as I do, it would be easy to get stuck in a rut and end up putting out the same album. This helped me relearn what I do.’ Thea continues. I once had a conversation with a friend about a female artist who had had kids… he thought the album she released subsequently sounded as if she thought she was the only woman ever to go through the birth experience. I never wanted Regardless to come across like that. For me, these are songs about being the custodian of somebody, but also about the process of letting go“.
Gilmore and long standing musical partner/producer Nigel Stonier have journeyed into new territories this time around, with Regardless featuring more lush string sections than scruffy acoustic guitars and harmonicas. 9 months were spent in 5 different studios, hooking up with collaborators Seadna McPhail (Elbow) Danish producers The Suppliers (Ron Sexsmith, Martha Wainwright) and string arranger Pete Whitfield (Plan B). There is a widescreen finish present, and the painstaking process has clearly been worthwhile, resulting in an album that feels like an evolution of Gilmore’s songwriting talents – bigger and glossier, but with the wit and honesty that sets her work apart.
“Don’t look now, the view just changed…” Thea asserts on lead single Love Came Looking For Me. For Gilmore and her growing body of fans, the view has surely never been better.

Violin and Piano Recital - David Angel and David Elwin
@
St Luke's Church
St Luke's Church
Hove
Two very different works in G major from the classical period frame a romantic rarity and a 20th century masterpiece in this programme. The evening opens with Mozart's dramatic two movement sonata K 379, composed in great haste in April of 1781. This is followed by Frank Bridge's Sonata of 1932, a passionate and richly varied example of the unjustly neglected composer's mature style. The second half begins with Clara Schumann's beautifully touching Three Romances opus 22, and the concert ends with Beethoven's last violin sonata, opus 96. Completed in 1812 for the French violinist Pierre Rode, it is an example of Beethoven at his most serene. Includes pre-concert talk at 6.30pm.

Imagine The Orb meeting a ceilidh band in the mind of Irvine Welsh.
‘This is it! Billy Nasty may have mixed pipes and dance on the decks but the Peatbog Faeries can play it live and it blew the audience away’ ~ Edinburgh Evening News
Nominated for Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012. The Peatbog Faeries have been described as ‘the future of Celtic dance music’. They incorporate many influences which take them from traditional jigs and reels through jazz, hip hop, reggae and more. This inventive and unique approach always bring to its audience a true flavour of traditional Scottish music whilst offering high octane Celtic dance music – so be prepared to dance! The new 6 piece line up – the Peatbog Faeries, goes back to the band’s roots with all the dynamics of the larger band, but a new, vibrant and exciting sound.
Please note, this is an all standing event.

The Great Skinhead Reunion
@
Various Venues, Brighton
Various Venues, Brighton
The Great Skinhead Reunion started as a meeting for a beer in 2011, with some old skinheads, who had been chatting on a facebook group, Symond offered to find a pub, The Volks on Madeira Drive gave the OK, and amazingly over 300 skinheads and ex skinheads turned up, The following year the icon of Jamaican Reggae Roy Ellis came to play, the age range from 16 to 70,
From strength to strength, the event is now over three nights, 31st May -2nd June, with Europes top DJ's playing original Jamaican Reggae, which was the music first adopted by the Skinhead culture.
This year we have some locally based bands playing, Peter and the Test Tube babies, Too many Crooks, with a guest musician Jenny Woo from Canada, and a modern day London band Booze and Glory. Lee Thompson of Madness will be doing a DJ set , The Piranhas playing their hits, such as Tom Hark and Zambezi.
Skinheads was a youth culture born from the mods of the 1960's when they came to Brighton in numbers. Fighting broke out between rival youth factions known as Rockers. The media termed the short haired Mods as Skinheads, hence the subculture was born. Gone are the days of Aggro, but the music and style remains, and has spread its wings across the globe, from England to muslim Indonesia, probably one of the most misunderstood and abused youth culture of them all, due to political extremism of the 1970's and Hollywood fantasy used to sell movies, and launch the career of actors like Russell Crow. Those elements are dead and buried, but the culture remains something to be proud of,with the recent movie made by British director Shane Meadows, the culture is once again in the forefront of modern fashion. People visit Brighton from all over the globe to the birthplace of a purely British subculture, making this the biggest gathering of its kind in the World, all are welcome, you dont have to be an active Skinhead. website www.subcultz.com for further details

NEW BRIGHTON COMMUNITY SINGING GROUP STARTING APRIL 2013 - SING YOURSELF HAPPY !
More and more people are discovering the pure joy of singing – it’s an easy way to get happy as it stimulates all parts of ourselves – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. In a group, it’s an exhilarating community experience !
This is not a choir, but a playshop where you can have fun exploring different ways of expressing yourself with your voice – singing, chanting, improvising, vocalising, sounding and playing voice games.
We’ll sing songs from across all musical genres, countries and cultures so the repertoire is varied and interesting, with always something new to learn and experience.
These sessions are open to everyone. You do not need any experience, just willingness to participate. Uncertain or unpractised singers are especially welcome ! More experienced vocalisers will benefit from the freedom to explore and a varied repertoire.
This is a drop-in group where the content will be different every week – this means I can offer you a wide variety of vocal experiences and I can respond as a leader to the people who turn up on a particular week. As the group develops, and if people come regularly, we may choose to work towards specific public performances or events related to Action for Happiness.
Come and sing yourself happy !
