Performance poetry and open slam!
Hammer and Tongue

Thu 2 Sep 7.30pm @ Komedia Studio Bar £5/4

Featuring:

SPLIFF RICHARD - dropping rhymes at breakneck speed, Spliff is renowned for the compa...ssion and energy of his performance, as he delivers a lyrical journey through culture, identity, society, food and the glorious green. Three time Hammer and Tongue Brighton slam champion, he is now also a regular on the UK festival circuit and this Summer co-facilitated workshops for the South East team as part of Apples and Snakes's national youth slam, Word Cup - an unstoppable poetic force!

BRENDAN CLEARY - Brendan's poems have never been for the squeamish or faint hearted... His often manic personas confront their demons, lay bare their hearts and reveal the anguish of their personal disorder in the city's terrain... Tragic, sad, but darkly comic, his poems speak for the dispossessed, the bedsit dwellers, the losers in love.

The dominant ideology is held up to question in these sketches of spoiled idealism, revealing a very subtle artfulness. Uncompromising and honest, Cleary continues to strike at raw nerves and his work reminds us how poetry can be a vital and haunting force. [Wrecking Ball Press]

The eternal teenager of Irish poetry, Cleary's readings/performances are justly renowned: straight-talking, comic, neurotic, deeply moving. [Martin Mooney]

Brendan Cleary has created a modern blues. These poems are stripped back, both in language & emotion. [Roddy Lumsden, on Weightless]

Some of us stay at home & write tame poems about wild things, Cleary gets out there & catches wild ones & brings them home alive. [Hugo Williams, on Some Turbulent Weather]

Plus local poet ASH FFRENCH - A favourite on the Brighton slam poetry scene, Ash was winner of the Brighton festival H&T slam 2010, and is currently studying for a degree in Literature and Creative writing at the university of Chichester. He also co-runs monthly music and poetry event Horseplay.

And of course, the OPEN SLAM! 8 places, 3 minutes: 1 winner!

Hosted at the very pinnacle of haute couture Autumnal chic by ROSY CARRICK and MIKE PARKER, with GIMLEY WHIPPLE womanning the decks with her literally magical musicking skills.Performance poetry and open slam! Komedia Studio Bar BN1 1UN
