The Old Market are delighted to present an immersive gig with the brilliant British electronic duo, Plaid.

Since the early 90s, the British duo have been steadily releasing an innovative brand of electronic music marked by playful melodies and tricky time signatures. Comprising Ed Handley and Andy Turner, both original members of Black Dog Productions, the duo combined influences like 80s electro and Detroit techno, greatly contributing to the British form of home-listening techno which would gradually come to be known as IDM.

The duo came into their own after splitting from Black Dog in 1995, signing to Warp, and releasing critically acclaimed albums such as 1997's Not for Threes (which included appearances by regular collaborators Björk and Nicolette) and 2001's Double Figure.

Plaid devoted much of the late 2000s to scoring films such as Heaven's Door, before returning to studio work with albums like Reachy Prints and Polymer, which blended acoustic and electronic elements. The duo explored sci-fi and artificial intelligence with their latest release, 2022's Feorm Falorx. Support TBC.

The Copper Family

The earliest mention of the Copper family is in the village of Rottingdean, when in 1593, a male Copper was married in the parish church.

There is a very good chance that the family was resident in or around Rottingdean long before this date. Always working in the agrarian community, most were farm labourers or shepherds, although James ‘Brasser’ Copper (b.1845) and his son Jim Copper (b.1882) were farm bailiffs or managers.

Singing seems to have run in the blood, and we know that the Coppers were particularly renowned for it.

In 1896, ‘Brasser’ Copper and his brother Tom were ‘collected’ by a musicologist Mrs Kate Lee, who noted some fifty songs from them, which in many ways became the foundation stone upon which the Folk Song Society (later the English Folk Dance and Song Society) was formed in 1898.

The songs were kept alive in the village through the lean years of disinterest in the 1920s and 30s by Jim Copper and his bother John.

Post-war, Jim’s son Bob Copper and his cousin Ron took on the mantle and, largely through Bob’s diligence and writings, they survive into the modern era.

Today the family is represented by Bob’s son and daughter John and Jill, his son-in-law Jon Dudley and their respective children, Mark, Andy Sean, Ben, Lucy and Tom. Recently Bob’s great grandson Flinn has joined the line-up thus making it the eighth consecutive known generation of The Copper Family to sing.

Expect an evening of traditional, unaccompanied English folk song from this historical and influential local folk singing family.

Marconi Union are one of the most popular ambient groups to emerge during the early 21st century. Since debuting with Under Wires and Searchlights in 2003, their music has touched on downtempo post-rock and ambient dub techno, as well as untethered, shimmering drone.

The group are best known for their 2011 composition Weightless, a collaboration with the British Academy of Sound Therapy designed to reduce stress. They have also collaborated with bassist Jah Wobble (on the 2013 full-length Anomic) and remixed composer Max Richter. Support TBC.

THE INFORMALS II 360 BY POLINA MEDVEDEVA & ANDREAS KÜHNE FEATURING PHONETIC & BOBBIE JOHNSON

For one night only, artist duo Polina Medvedeva and Andreas Kühne (NL/NO) will transform The Old Market with an immersive performance and cinematic experience. Live-mixing documentary footage with sound art, the artists will perform alongside two of the city’s outstanding musicians: Phonetic and Bobbie Johnson.

This 360 event is a new, re-worked presentation of the 2021 performance of The Informals II, co-commissioned by Lighthouse and Brighton Festival, and developed out of a Re-Imagined residency at Lighthouse in 2019, during which artists Polina and Andreas set out to explore and document Brighton’s sub-cultures and youth cultures.

POLINA MEDVEDEVA works within the intersection of film, installation and performance, portraying individuals or communities who exist by circumventing political prohibitions, societal stereotypes, and effects of economic crises and conflicts. Questioning linearity in storytelling, she explores formats that allow for nuance and multiplicity of narratives.

Sound artist ANDREAS KÜHNE utilises electroacoustic music, collaborative audiovisual performances and interactive installations to explore non-idiomatic field improvisation as a methodology for interdisciplinary and site-specific art production, presentation and participation.

PHONETIC is an artist who is already synonymous with Brighton’s thriving hip hop scene – thanks to her skills on the mic, combined with her unwavering creative drive. That drive and talent go way beyond her 25 years and they are good signifiers as to why she has already earned support slots for a number of notable artists and acts, including Rag’N’Bone Man, Children of Zeus, Skinnyman, LEVELZ, Dr Syntax and Amy True.

BOBBIE JOHNSON is a Rapper/Producer coming out of the sunny seaside city Brighton (UK). Her work spans conscious thought and social commentary, as showcased on her latest EPs ‘You & I’ and ‘The Defier’. Over the past few years, she has been supporting the likes of Rag’N’Bone Man, Roots Manuva, The Pharcyde + many many more

As someone who has composed or arranged music for over fifty movies (including classic sequences in Monty Python's Life of Brian, two James Bond films, and Titanic) played saxophone with artists as varied as Peter Green, Nick Drake, Little Richard, Prince, Van Morrison and Bob Marley, arranged for Michael Jackson, George Michael, Rod Stewart, Tina Turner, Barry White, Diana Ross, Simple Minds and Prefab Sprout among others, produced Aled Jones' Christmas smash hit Walking in the Air, been responsible for over 4,000 commercials worldwide, won an Emmy and a Bafta, arranged four major Grammy winning tracks and won four Lifetime Achievement Awards, his is - as you can imagine - a rich and storied career.
Called by the LA Times 'one of the few film composers with authentic jazz skills' he also has a worldwide reputation as a jazz musician, having played with everyone from Chet Baker to Jon Batiste via Bud Freeman. Ushti Baba - Riotous folk fusing hypnotic pan-European melodies with modern dance rhythms. Heavy beatbox roots, wild fiddle-driven fervour, an energetic thrill-filled musical journey from familiar lands to the beyond and back. Ushti Baba pay warm tribute to their trad folk roots whilst delivering a fierce fresh perspective that captivates crowds.

Moonshine Malarkey - A signature blend of ol’ time swing, blues, calypso and folk. A merry five piece led by a barrel aged voice, weaving sweet melodies with fanciful tales.

Venue - For the sixth time we’re taking over the Whitecliffs beachfront cafe bar, bringing in our own stage and sound system and raising the roof in a way this venue has never seen before. It's well worth the trek and unlike any other party, we’re out of town so plenty of chilled vibes, we have the beach on our doorstep, a nice long live music hall with a bar and lots of covered outdoor space with comfy sofas looking out to the sea.

Brighton City Singers is back Wednesday September 6th for more singing!

We are a friendly, non-auditioning and inclusive community choir based in Brighton and Hove. Whether you’re a shower singer, have sung with choirs in the past or are an experienced singer, people of all singing abilities are welcome to join us! You don’t need to be able to read sheet music.

Led by professional vocal coach and entertainer MJ Paranzino, we sing everything from Mozart to ABBA, gospel to swing, musicals to new contemporary songs and more!

We also have a range of exciting performance opportunities each year including singing at major music venues and festivals!

Rehearsals take place every Thursday evening from 7-9 pm at Hangleton Primary School, BN3 8LF.

Membership is £25 per calendar month. This covers all the sheet music you'll use, the music director and pianist’s time, and the venue. This also covers all the performances you’ll be doing throughout the year!

Chris Coull’s Christmas Jazz

Enjoy the launch of a new series of jazz breakfast concerts, hosted by celebrated local bandleader and trumpeter Chris Coull.

Chris has played with and led bands throughout the world, including 15 years as Director of Doha Jazz in Qatar. Melodic and thoughtful, his approach takes inspiration from classic 50s and 60s players such as Clifford Brown, Miles Davis and Kenny Dorham.

This special Boxing Day concert sees Chris joined by several multi-award winning musicians, including jazz vocalist Georgia Mancio, world-renowned saxophonist Alan Barnes, and Sussex based pianist Mark Edwards.

Georgia won the Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Vocalist in 2021, Best Album in 2020, and has been nominated for numerous awards at the Jazz FM, British Jazz, and Urban Music Awards. Alan Barnes is a prolific international performer, composer, arranger, bandleader and soloist.

The rest of the band features Mark Edwards (piano), Dan Sheppard (bass), and Dave Ohm (drums).

Venue - For the seventh time we’re taking over the Whitecliffs beachfront cafe bar, bringing in our own stage and sound system and raising the roof in a way this venue has never seen before. It's well worth the trek and unlike any other party, we’re out of town so plenty of chilled vibes, we have the beach on our doorstep, a nice long live music hall with a bar and lots of covered outdoor space with comfy sofas looking out to the sea.

Transport from central Brighton
Bus - We’re on the beach in Saltdean, East Brighton, so there’s many buses from all over Brighton getting there (12, 12A, 14, 14B, 14C, 27) and night buses (N12 & N14) from just outside the venue to take you back between midnight and 3am. The journey is between 20-30 mins, the stop is Longridge Avenue, from there just walk down onto the beach and you can’t miss Whitecliffs.
Car or Van - There’s lots of free overnight parking without a height restriction in the Lido car park or in the carvery car park if the Lido one is full. There’s a pedestrian tunnel under the road to the beach.
Bike - Whitecliffs is on the end of the Undercliff Walk which is about a 40min ride east along the seafront, behind the marina and along the undercliff pedestrian path. Don’t forget your lights!
