Join us for a special in-person weekend workshop in Zenzie Tinker’s Brighton conservation studio and learn everything you need to know to start designing and making your own traditional and contemporary smocked garments.
The technique of smocking can trace its British origins back as far as the Middle Ages. During the 18th and 19th centuries it was most commonly found on labourers' smocks, due to its ability to be both form-fitting and flexible. The technique and garment have since become more or less synonymous, but of course the technique itself can be used in any garment for shaping or decoration and is being taken forwards by 21st century designers and hobbyists everywhere.
Over the course of the weekend you will learn both the practical techniques of smocking and how to use it to design and make your own smocked garments.

Join our plucky heroine Will as disguised as a knight she rides off on her farm donkey to rescue her legendary dad Wilhelm Tell from the wicked Baron Boris’s deepest darkest dungeon. Inspired by the tales of Sir Lancelot and Robin Hood, Will knows all about standing up to tyrants but nothing has prepared her for when Boris’s much put-upon daughter Edeltraut falls madly in love with her and insists on being rescued too.
Don’t miss this mad-cap comic adventure which promises capers around a castle, damsels in distress, a ‘Punch and Judy’ show on the battlements, and a joust to the death with life-size kinetic puppet horses – all joined together with six amazing original songs.
Madcap physical comedy with capers around castles, damsels in distress, a jaw-dropping joust to the death, and lots of original catchy musical numbers.
Two preview performances only. £5 tickets. Not to be missed. Recommended 5+

Live drawing performance
For his upcoming exhibition in the Phoenix Art Space artist Ram Samocha presents a series of energetic and expressive drawings. Many were created in a short period of time in front of and sometimes in collaboration with a live audience and made with colour pencils, wax crayons, acrylic, and ink on stone paper. Drawings have also been worked back into using metalpoint, shifting the centre of his work from a more primal drawing action to a rich and layered new painting.
Exhibition open from 2 - 24 July in the Main Gallery. Join us at the opening Friday 1 July, 18.00 - 20.00 with a live performance by the artist at 18:30. Ram will also deliver an artist talk on Saturday 23 July, 12.00 - 13.00.
Alongside his solo exhibition Ram Samocha will also curate Draw to Perform, a drawing performance festival that will run in the gallery space over two weekends. It will include live performances by ten international artists and four workshops.

Unlike previous, larger and more conventional Nicholson shows, this one centres on his life in Rottingdean - installed, as it is, in his house there - although it covers his early and later work too.

This is more than an exhibition; this is a call for action. Step into Goal Power! and make a pledge to actively support, grow and shout about football for all.
2022 will see the biggest participation figures in women’s football ever. Matches are now shown on live mainstream tv, stadiums will be full for the Lionesses European Championship matches, more girls are playing in schools than ever before. Football has the power to change lives, and footballers are using this power to take a stand on beliefs close to their hearts.
How do we make sure this momentum continues, that women and girls have the same opportunities to play and work in football, that women’s teams are successful and sustainable?
This exhibition gives you our dream squad, women who have dedicated their lives to the ‘beautiful game’. Share in their stories of resistance, perseverance, but above all a love for football that means they have trailblazed the way for women and girls today. From the feminist players of 1894 and the war worker footballers of the First World War to those who defied the Football Association to play and those who have changed the Football Association from within.
We pledge to shine a light on their stories and experiences. What’s your pledge?
We’re delighted to announce that we are working on a series of community activations with Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club. Together with past and present players and coaches we’re exploring the exciting heritage of women’s teams in Brighton & Hove and the power of football in women and girls lives today.
Look out for the Footballers in Residence programme. Local teams will be delving into Brighton Museum, holding special events, and sharing their discoveries and stories.

Tatty Devine’s statement jewellery is always ahead of the curve. Their jewellery tells stories and generates conversation.
Misshapes: The Making of Tatty Devine, features over 100 pieces from the past 20 years, from the early leather cuffs and piano belts to giant two metre versions of their ‘greatest hits’ including a lobster, their magpies and a huge banana, alongside sketchbooks, ephemera and two new films.
Tatty Devine’s founders Rosie Wolfenden and Harriet Vine set up a market stall in Spitalfields Market in the mid 1990s. Together they challenged jewellery conventions and invested in a laser cutting machine, going on to create personality-packed jewellery much loved and still culturally relevant 20 years on.
